Sometimes It’s Good to Escape

As a summer associate with WilmerHale's Los Angeles office, I am fortunate to attend many events throughout the summer hosted just for the summer associates to have fun and get to know each other and other attorneys in the office. For our first event, 10 of us from the LA office (two summer associates, seven attorneys and our recruiter) went to Escape Room LA.

The concept behind escape rooms is basic: you are locked in a room for one hour and must solve puzzles to find your way out. It seems simple, but most escape rooms only have between a 10 to 15 percent success rate! Our group participated in an alchemist-themed room, and we had a blast. There were many different intricate puzzles, each requiring us to use different skills, including matching scents, solving math problems, decoding riddles, and even angling mirrors to point a laser at one specific point in the room. The whole experience was challenging and interactive, and it gave us a chance to work through issues outside of the law. The timer buzzed on us when we were on the very last step of the final puzzle, so instead of walking away victorious, we ended the event by taking pictures with signs that said, “Almost a genius” and “At least we had fun!” Although I am competitive and I like to win (like all lawyers), I honestly did not care we lost because we had such a great time through the process. The best part about the escape room was that it naturally required us to work as a team, and we all worked really well together!

After we finished the escape room, we enjoyed a lovely dinner at Terroni, a creative Italian restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. Not only was dinner delicious, but it was so much fun to continue to get to know the attorneys in our office; if you couldn't tell from my last blog post—I love the people here!
