Steven F. Cherry
Retired Partner
During more than three decades at WilmerHale, Steven F. Cherry built a distinguished career representing companies and individuals in government investigations, complex litigation, class actions and arbitration. He became widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading antitrust lawyers, with Chambers USA calling him “an exceptional lawyer” and “unquestionably the best antitrust lawyer in town,” particularly noted for his work in international cartel and grand jury investigations. His practice spanned major global antitrust matters across industries including generic pharmaceuticals, auto parts, container shipping, vehicle carrier shipping, freight forwarding, flat‑panel components, chemicals and financial services. He retired from WilmerHale in 2024.
Mr. Cherry’s accomplishments included persuading enforcement agencies to close investigations without action, negotiating the largest reduction in a criminal antitrust fine in US history, and guiding clients through some of the most complex leniency and amnesty applications undertaken. He also served as lead counsel in high‑stakes class actions involving antitrust, consumer protection, securities, and ERISA claims, securing repeated victories—among them a landmark Second Circuit ruling requiring arbitration of direct purchaser antitrust claims and a subsequent US Supreme Court ruling rejecting class arbitration where contracts were silent. In addition to his litigation work, Mr. Cherry authored numerous publications and spoke frequently at industry, bar and agency programs worldwide on antitrust investigations, class actions, and arbitration.
