We are proud to announce that Special Counsel Dr. Maxi Scherer has been appointed as a Global Professor in the NYU Law Abroad program in Paris. The NYU Law Abroad program gives J.D. students the opportunity to spend the Spring semester of either their 2L or 3L year immersed in the law and legal culture of another part of the world through an academic program designed and administered by the Law School. The program is designed to help students develop global fluency, sensitivity to different legal cultures and contexts, linguistic ability, and the flexibility to work effectively across jurisdictions. Scherer is teaching a course in International Commercial Arbitration in the Spring 2014 semester.

“We are delighted that Maxi Scherer has joined our Global Law Faculty,” said Kevin Davis, Beller Family Professor of Business Law at NYU Law School and Vice Dean in charge of global programs. “Members of our Global Law Faculty are distinguished practitioners and jurists, and our students will benefit enormously from Maxi’s deep knowledge of the law and invaluable practical experience in international arbitration.”

Franco Ferrari, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Transnational Litigation Arbitration and Commercial Law at NYU School of Law, who leads the Paris program, adds: “Maxi is a great scholar and an amazing teacher. Students are privileged to have her as a teacher.”

Scherer, who has practiced for a decade in Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr’s International Arbitration Group, is also a full-time faculty member at Queen Mary, University of London, Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) and School of International Arbitration, where she teaches various courses in International Dispute Resolution, including a specialized module on International Energy Arbitration. She is also the Director of the Queen Mary Paris LLM program.

Her other academic appointments include visiting professor and guest lecturer positions at SciencesPo Law School Paris, Georgetown Centre of Transnational Legal Studies, Freie Universität Berlin, University of Melbourne, Université de Versailles, ESCP Europe Paris & Berlin, Université de Fribourg, University of Würzburg, Pepperdine Law School and Universität Basel.

Scherer is admitted to the Paris Bar and as solicitor (England and Wales) and has extensive experience with arbitral practice and procedure both in civil and common law systems. She has represented and advised clients in numerous international arbitrations before most major arbitral institutions and regularly serves as arbitrator, including as presiding and sole arbitrator, both in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations.
