WilmerHale Continues to Grow LA Litigation and Investigations Practices

April 27, 2011

WilmerHale is pleased to announce the arrival of Jessica Freiheit Kurzban as counsel in the firm’s Los Angeles office and a member of the Litigation/Controversy and Securities Departments.

Ms. Kurzban joins the firm from Proskauer Rose LLP, where she established a broad-based practice focused on complex commercial litigation, SEC enforcement defense and internal investigations. She has represented corporate and individual clients before federal and state courts, as well as before arbitral panels. Ms. Kurzban’s experience is varied, with recent highlights including the successful defense of an outside director and audit committee member of a publicly traded technology company in a shareholder derivative suit alleging breach of fiduciary duty; a bench trial representing a private equity firm’s portfolio company against a former CEO in a breach of contract suit; a breach of contract arbitration on behalf of an international oil tanker company; and an internal investigation into a public company’s options granting practices.

“We are very pleased to welcome Jessica to the firm,” said David C. Marcus, vice chair of WilmerHale’s Litigation/Controversy Department. “Her experience handling business trials, securities litigation and internal investigations is a natural fit for our firm, and her addition will benefit our existing and future clients.”

WilmerHale’s litigation capabilities are nationally recognized. The firm represents clients in complex civil and criminal litigation, corporate investigations and international arbitrations. Our lawyers receive national and international recognition as top-rated practitioners. Most recently, the inaugural 2010 Best Law Firm rankings by US News Media Group and Best Lawyers ranked our general commercial litigation practice in the first tier nationally.

“Jessica’s arrival adds to our roster of Los Angeles-based lawyers with the litigation and trial experience necessary to handle our clients’ most significant and high-stakes matters,” added Randall R. Lee, partner-in-charge of the firm’s LA office.

WilmerHale’s LA office was established in late 2007 to strengthen and expand the firm’s preeminent enforcement, litigation and regulatory practices in Southern California and throughout the western United States, and now consists of 19 lawyers, including six partners, who focus on several practice areas that are core strengths of the firm—intellectual property litigation; SEC enforcement defense; government investigations and white-collar defense; antitrust litigation; and other complex litigation.

“I am thrilled and honored to join WilmerHale and eager to begin working with such a talented and first-rate team in LA and beyond,” added Ms. Kurzban.

Ms. Kurzban is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. She earned her BA and her Bachelor of Common and Civil Law from McGill University, where she was book reviews editor for the McGill Law Journal.
