WilmerHale is pleased to announce the arrival of David Manspeizer to the firm’s New York office as a partner in the Litigation/Controversy Department and IP Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Manspeizer will focus on patent litigation, particularly on pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, both areas in which the firm is well known.
Mr. Manspeizer joins WilmerHale from Wyeth, where he was vice president of intellectual property and associate general counsel. As the chief intellectual property officer for this top-10 pharmaceutical company, Mr. Manspeizer led Wyeth’s 140-person global IP department. He was responsible for oversight of all patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret and other IP matters, including litigation, prosecution, diligence, counseling and public policy, as well as the oversight of all outside counsel activities. In addition to these management responsibilities, as a trained litigator he directly supervised parallel US and foreign patent and trademark litigations.
“David has deep experience and a long-standing relationship with the firm,” said David Bassett, chair of WilmerHale’s IP Litigation Practice Group. “His practice fits nicely with the firm’s strengths and our clients’ needs, and we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome him.”
“I worked closely with WilmerHale in my former role at Wyeth, and know first-hand that it is an expert team, full of experience and propelled by industry leaders,” said Mr. Manspeizer. “I am pleased to re-enter the law firm world at this esteemed firm, and eager to get started.”
WilmerHale’s IP Litigation Practice Group boasts a leading patent, copyright and trademark litigation team backed by the academic and industry experience of more than 160 lawyers and technology specialists with scientific or technical degrees. It has been recognized as one of the best in the nation, named by The American Lawyer as the “Intellectual Property Litigation Group of the Year” in 2008. The firm was also recognized as having one of the top-four IP litigation practices in the magazine’s two previous surveys, conducted in 2004 and 2006.
Before joining Wyeth, Mr. Manspeizer was a patent litigator at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP in Washington DC. He joined that firm in 1991 as an associate and departed in 2002 as a partner. While at Finnegan, he handled pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent litigation in US District Courts and the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as at the International Trade Commission.
Mr. Manspeizer is admitted to the bars of New Jersey and the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the US Supreme Court, and the US Patent and Trademark Office. He received his JD from Rutgers University School of Law—Newark (1991) and earned his BA in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania (1986). Mr. Manspeizer will practice in New York under the supervision of members of the New York bar.
